Other Pets

Ferrets typically get along just fine with other pets, depending on the type of pet and temperament.

Many dogs and cats live in the same household as ferrets. Pets that are usually not a good idea to have around ferrets are; birds, snakes, gerbils, hamsters, mice and rats. Ferrets are mousers by nature, and will attack and sometimes kill small rodents and birds. Snakes will see ferrets as prey, and the ferret does not usually come out a winner.

Cats will usually get along fine with ferrets. You will just need to supervise encounters at first, to make sure no one is hurts. Most cats don't know what to make of ferrets, and will avoid them until they get used to them. The fast movements of a ferret generally do not put cats at ease.

With dogs, it depends a lot on the breed and temperament. Natural hunters need to be taught that ferrets are not prey. All dogs must be closely monitored with ferrets at all times. The most important thing is that the dog is obedient, and understands the word NO. The best way is to have the dog on a short leash, with the ferret running around, and you holding the leash. If the dog acts like he is going to hurt the ferret, you can pull back sharply on the leash, and let the dog know that it is not okay. Never leave a ferret and another animal alone together, period.

Compatibility

Ferrets generally get along well with cats and dogs. However, you will need to carefully supervise all interaction. When introducing a new ferret to an established ferret in your home, you may have a dominance battle lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a few months depending on how territorial the original ferret is. Young children should always be supervised when around ferrets. Ferrets are not malicious, but they will defend themselves when frightened or hurt. You should never leave a young child around any animal unsupervised.
